Replacing Guttering
Planning
Regardless of the size of your guttering job, the following simple
tips will make the project much easier.
Calculate the lengths of downpipe and guttering you require and complete
the survey list of necessary components. When ordering, it is always
better to over-estimate the lengths required than find yourself short
half way through the job.
The Window Merchants will always credit returned stock.
Fascia brackets must be no more than 1m apart. Running outlets, stopend
outlets, angles, union clips and stopends need a supporting fascia
bracket within 150mm of the fitting. Some are designed to be screwed
directly to the fascia, but these still require support brackets within
150mm.
Removing the old guttering
The removal of old plastic guttering is relatively straight forward,
but cast iron guttering should be removed using great care as it is
extremely heavy and will probably have sharp edges.
If the screws are rusted into place, you will need to lever them off
with a bar.
Fitting the outlet and brackets
The first step in fitting your new guttering is to fit either the
running outlet in the middle of a gutter run or the stopend outlet
at the end of a run to the fascia. This must be positioned directly
over the drain position using a plumbline to ensure that it is lined
up correctly. screw the outlet to the fascia, remembering that the
far end of the gutter must be higher than the outlet by 10mm for every
6m of gutter.
The next step is to fit the end fascia bracket.
Check that the fascia bracket is level and allow for the required
fall. Repeat with the other end fascia bracket if the outlet is in
the middle of the gutter.
Tie a string line from the outlet to the end fascia bracket, as a
guide for installing the remaining fascia brackets. Work outwards
from the outlet, remembering that the brackets should be placed no
more than 1m apart. survey
